The Qatar Airways Company Q.C.S.C. owned by the government of Qatar was first established as the flag carrier for Qatar in November of 1993. Operations began in January of 94 with the first flight taking off in May of that year between Doha in Qatar and Amman in Jordan. At the time of Qatar's inaugural service the appointed CEO was Sheikh Hamad Bin Ali Bin Jabor Al Thani and he had only 79 staff. Today Qatar Airways directly employs over 24,000 staff and since November 1996 has been run by CEO Akbar Al Baker who re-launched the carrier in 1997 under the mandate of His Highness The Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who outlined a vision to turn Qatar Airways into a leading international airline with the highest standards of service and excellence. Akbar Al Baker has been instrumental in doing so shaping the development of Qatar Airways from a small regional airline and creating one of the youngest and fastest growing airlines in the world. Just 14 years later and Qatar Airways was celebrating with good reason as in April of 2011 they launched their 100th destination and in June of the same year they were named ‘Airline of the Year’ by Skytrax World Airline Awards. Qatar Airways operate what is termed as a hub and spoke network from the modern Hamad International Airport in Doha and connects passengers to over 150 destinations which spans six continents. Qatar Airways joined the oneworld alliance on the 30th October 2013 making it the only major Gulf Carrier that is part of the three big global airline alliances. Qatar Airways continue to grow at an astonishing rate and between 2010 and 2015 they have added 52 destinations to their expansive network. 2016 Qatar Airways introduced their Airbus A380 into service and Sydney was chosen to be the first destination to receive this aircraft, which also saw the introduction of their first class product reaching Australian shores. They now operate 6 Airbus A380’s with another seven on order from Airbus. The A380 Airbus ‘Superjumbo’ – is the world’s biggest passenger aircraft Qatar Airways has a configuration that is designed for luxurious travel that Qatar is renowned for. They have not continued in their growth with 2016 seeing 14 new destinations and 19 new aircraft added to their fleet. Qatar Airways are continuing fleet expansion and renewal of existing planes to keep the fleet young. They have placed a record US$11.7 billion order for 30 B787-9 Dreamliner's and 10 777-300ERs, as well as signing a Letter of Intent for up to 60 737 Max 8s valued at US$6.9 billion. When it comes to safety Qatar Airways takes things very seriously and was the first airline in the world to pass the International Air Transport Association(IATA) Operational Safety Audit with a maximum 100 per cent compliance in 2003 and has done so with every two year renewal since. Having already won ‘Airline of the Year’ three times and been awarded for service excellence Qatar Airways has won ‘Best Business Class in the Middle East’ for eight consecutive years.
