Lufthansa Review: Is Lufthansa a Good Airline?
Yes, especially on long-haul routes. Lufthansa flies to more than 200 destinations, offers four cabins, and is a founding member of Star Alliance. On European routes you choose from several fare levels, so you decide how much to include.
Strengths
- Cabins: Four cabins to choose from, including Premium Economy on long-haul routes
- Comfort: Long-haul Economy seats are over 40 cm wide, and night flights include a travel set with a sleep mask and earplugs
- Entertainment: Films, TV and radio on long-haul flights, plus free messaging on short flights for Travel ID and Miles & More members
- Star Alliance: A founding member, so miles and connections work across a large partner network
- Network: More than 200 destinations
Good to know
- Fares: European fares come in several levels. The cheapest, Economy Basic, covers a personal item only and cannot be changed or refunded
- Baggage: A checked bag is not included on the cheapest European fares. Your free allowance depends on the route, the cabin and the fare you book
- Seats: Choosing your seat in advance costs extra on the cheaper fares
Best for long-haul trips and for connecting across Europe, if you want a choice of cabins and fare levels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Lufthansa generally offers rotating fare deals rather than public promo codes. Wego promo codes for Lufthansa are also listed on this page for eligible bookings made through Wego.
The Lufthansa hand baggage allowance is one 8 kg bag up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm plus a personal item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm on most Economy fares, and two bags in Business and First. Economy Basic on short-haul routes includes the personal item only.
Lufthansa's checked baggage allowance in Economy and Premium Economy is one bag up to 23 kg and 158 cm, with 32 kg as the top weight before it counts as extra-heavy. The exact limit still depends on your fare and route.
Lufthansa extra-baggage fees vary by route and are usually lower when booked online in advance. Some routes offer a discount on a second Economy bag. Oversized carry-on bags charged at the gate cost USD 75 to USD 125.
Lufthansa Economy Basic includes a seat and one personal item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm. On short-haul routes the 8 kg cabin bag and checked baggage aren't included, so the next fare tier can work out cheaper than paying for a bag.
Lufthansa Premium Economy is a separate long-haul cabin with up to 50 percent more space on all sides than Economy, plus an adjustable footrest, a cocktail table, an amenity kit, a welcome drink, an enhanced menu and an 11 to 12 inch screen.
Compare travel dates and fare types because prices vary by route and season. Economy Basic includes fewer extras, so compare the total price after adding any bags or services you need.
Lufthansa Miles & More is the airline's frequent flyer program. Members earn miles from flights, around 40 partner airlines and everyday spending. Miles can be redeemed for upgrades, rental cars or Worldshop purchases, while Cash & Miles can cover part of a fare.
Yes. Lufthansa offers First Class, with dedicated lounges in Frankfurt, Munich and New York. First Class passengers and HON Circle members can also use the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt.
